We’re excited to announce a first of its kind event for our area, the Truckee Fly Fishing Festival on Saturday November 18th. Matt Heron Fly Fishing has partnered with Truckee Tourism Business Improvement District to bring you a day of fly fishing fun that can’t be found anywhere else in the state!

It’s no coincidence that the event is taking place during some of the best fishing of the season. This is a great excuse to come up for the weekend, wet a line and enjoy the festival all in one.

Demo Day and Guide Presentations

The Free Demo Day will be from 10am-3:30pm at the Glenshire Bridge Fishing Access parking lot in Truckee (Subject to change). Rub elbows with the best Reps. in the biz from Sage, RIO, Costa, Simms, Redington and Truckee Trout Unlimited. Cast the newest rods and lines, try on some new shades and more.

During this event, some of the best guides on the Truckee with be giving presentations on topics such as short line nymphing, indicator fishing, single hand spey and more. Dress for any weather and be ready to fish!

Fly Fishing Film Tour

The evening will conclude with a showing of the Fly Fishing Film Tour at the Truckee Community Arts Center. Come and enjoy the best films in the industry while drinking a few beers and meeting new friends. The event will also have a raffle and fundraiser for the Reno/Tahoe Cast Hope. A local non-profit that gets at risk and underprivileged youth on the water through exposure to the outdoors via fly fishing.

By November 1st tickets will be available locally, at a discount, at Ace Mountain Hardware in Truckee and the Reno Fly Shop for $15 (Cash only). Tickets maybe purchased online at the f3t.com or at the door for $20. Space is limited.

Calendar of Events

Demo Day

Location- Glenshire Bridge Fishing Access (location subject to change), Truckee River. Click here for directions.

10am-3:30pm: Manufacturer reps will have booths set up in the parking lot and along the river.

11 am: On the Water Presentation- Streamer Fishing the Truckee by  Dan LeCount.

Learn everything you need to know about chucking big bugs at Truckee trout. Dan will cover everything from lines, flies and presentations. This is a must see presentation!

12:15 pm: On the Water Presentation- Single and Two Handed Spey for the Truckee by Jordan Romney

Learn about techniques for swinging the Truckee. Increase your knowledge of soft hackles and streamers and when to use them. Jordan will be breaking down Switch Rods, Trout Spey Rods, and Single Hand Spey lines.

1:30 pm: On the Water Presentation – Indicator Fishing the Truckee by Matt Heron

Matt will be showcasing everything thing you need to know when it comes to indicator fishing the Truckee. Topics will include perfecting mends, the “flop n’ roll”, the 90 degree rule, re-position mends, setting the hook and the perfect rod, reel and line outfit.

2:45 pm: On the Water Presentation- Short Line Nymphing by Doug Ouellette

In this clinic Doug will share his proven techniques to effectively fish the difficult Truckee River. He will cover how to properly read water and explain why fish hold in certain places. This is a hands on educational clinic and questions are encouraged.

Guide Bios-

 

Matt Heron- Matt grew up chasing trout and bass in the historic Adirondack mountains of upstate NY and received his first fly from his parents in 1991. After graduating from SUNY Morrisville and Cortland he moved to Livingston Montana to work for the Federation of Fly Fishers.

For the last 12 years, Matt has owned and operated Matt Heron Fly Fishing, one of the nations top schools and outfitters. His staff of talented guides and instructors is one of the most experienced crews in the country. Matt is an FFI Certified Casting Instructor and on the Sage, Simms, Costa and Rio pro teams.

Matt is also the regional director for Cast Hope, a non profit that exposes at risk and underprivileged youth to the outdoors via fly fishing. When he’s not in the area, he can be found hosting clients and friends to some of the worlds best fly fishing destinations and lodges.

 

Jordan Romney- Jordan grew up just minutes from Putah Creek, in the town of Winters. He eventually moved to North Lake Tahoe to challenge himself on the beautiful streams and lakes the Sierra’s had to offer. In 2009 he decided to turn his passion into a career and attended the premier Clearwater Lodge guide school. Jordan now guides many different waters in Northern California including Putah, the Yuba, Feather, forks of the American River, and is the lead casting instructor for Matt Heron Fly Fishing school in North Lake Tahoe.

Dan LeCount- Dan is a fly fishing guide in the Truckee area with a passion for the natural world. He grew up on the California coast, spending his youth exploring the hills and streams near Half Moon Bay. He started fly fishing around 11 on an annual pilgrimage to the eastern Sierras with his father and brothers and hasn’t stopped since. Dan is a contract fly designer with Umpqua Feather Merchants, a rod builder, published author, photographer and artist. He has worked in the fly fishing industry almost 20 years and is very active in many of the local watershed conservation programs, beyond just his work with T.U. He gives many talks every year on fishing the Truckee area along with talks on fly fishing tactics and ethics. He is a 4th generation fly fisher and comes from a long line of teachers.

 

Doug Ouellette- A California native, Doug first started fly fishing in 1968 on O’Dell Cr. in Oregon.

Through many years of fly fishing streams and stillwaters he has developed many unique techniques. These techniques have been proven to be extremely productive throughout the world, this is evident by his extensive “trophy fish” gallery. He enjoys teaching and sharing his knowledge with all levels of flyfishers.

He has traveled throughout the country presenting fly fishing shows since 1985. Doug is a California Guide and a Nevada Master Guide (#25845) and he is owner of www.calvadaflyfishing.com and Pyramid Lake Guide Service. Doug is also a contract fly tier for Umpqua Flies. He now lives and is based in Reno, Nevada.
