Well to say run off is in full swing would be an understatement. As many of you know it kicked off a few weeks ago with a big rain-on-snow event, followed by two weeks of 50 and 60 degree weather.
Flows are in the neighborhood of 2500-4500 CFS between Truckee and the upper canyon. For many this is a great time to stock up on some last minute fly tying before summer. For others this is prime time.
There is no question that these big flows have fish feeding like crazy and you should take advantage! The mix of cold, high water has the fish on the banks and at your feet.
Other than the few days of mud, fishing has been outstanding. The color is a “steelhead green” and just right for big fish. Make sure to concentrate on water walking speed or slower.
We’re throwing 3x-0x leaders & tippet and lots of different flies. Worms and eggs are always on the menu this time of year, but try a little bit of everything. Rubberlegs, March browns, attractors like Copper John’s in every color and even crayfish.
This is also a great time of year to get fish on streamers. Fish 12-15 lbs leaders and pound the banks with a slow retrieve.
Don’t forget it’s prime time for spawning rainbows too. Especially on the Little Truckee. Be mindful of their redds, watch your step and leave them alone to do their thing.
We have guides available each day this spring and May is shaping up to be an outstanding month for us with early run off.
