We’re thrilled to announce that starting the spring of 2020 we’ll be hosting two separate, 3 and 4 day fly fishing school options. These fantastic school offerings will include everything except a fishing license and dinners each day.
Geared towards beginner and intermediate anglers, these options will have a bit of everything for everone. Weather you’re looking to improve your dry fly fishing, indicator presentations or try your hand at Euro Style Nymphing, we’ve got you covered!
Option #1- Truckee Trout School
What- 3 days instruction/guiding, 4 nights lodging at the Cedar House Sport Hotel

Join the talented team of guides and instructors at Matt Heron Fly Fishing for their all inclusive three day, four night, Truckee Trout School.
Already regarded as one of the top schools in the country, this A-Z program will cover all aspects of any aspiring trout angler could possibly want to cover in three uniquely different fishing venues.
Day one will start with an outdoor, classroom style lesson plan covering an introduction to gear, knots, rigging and a beginner’s guide to aquatic entomology.
We’ll finish with formal casting lessons and guided fishing on our private, stocked ponds.
We’ll follow up day one with a day on the famous Truckee River in Lake Tahoe. Here students will learn about all aspects of indicator fishing, tight lining, streamer fishing, live bug sampling and more.
On day three, school will conclude on the banks of the Little Truckee River, the regions local tailwater. Here students will be versed on all things dry fly including dry dropper techniques and fighting big fish on light tippet and small flies.

Did you know in many cases up to 90-99% of a trout’s diet can be subsurface? Join the team at Matt Heron Fly Fishing for one of the most comprehensive four day nymphing clinics on the market.
Subsurface School will cover every detail about fishing two of the most effective methods out there, indicator fishing and Euro Style Nymphing (ESN).
Days one and two will focus exclusivity on beginner to advanced techniques for strike indicator fishing. Days three and 4 will do the same for Euro Style Nymphing, or tight linning as it’s commonly known.
We’ll give you skills and tools needed to effectively cover all water types using both techniques on the famous Truckee River in Lake Tahoe, California. The Truckee, famous for its large, hard fighting wild trout and is a nymph fisherman’s dream.
The Truckee is your classic western freestone consisting of riffles, runs, pools and tailouts. Not to mention endless miles of pocket water, perfect for tight line style fishing.
