TRUCKEE RIVER FLY FISHING REPORT:

Not much has changed the last few weeks, the time is still…now!

The Truckee River water temps are in the 50s in the morning and getting up the high 50s by the afternoon. A few guys have reported low 60s in the evening. In the end, water temps are perfect through the entire system.

The fish are everywhere, runs, riffles, pools, pocket water, don’t overlook anything.

If you’re not good a fishing fast water, you better learn quick. You’re leaving fish on the table if that water intimidates you. Drop us a note, happy to teach you a few things.

-Guide Mike D. teaching the next generation!!

As a guide, I absolutely love this time of year because we can now broaden our horizons after fishing the same runs for months when the water was colder. Game on!

Flows from Truckee to Boca are 264-500 cfs. This stretch of river is really in prime summer shape. Boca to the Farad guage is ranging from 1,000-1,100. Slightly higher than normal for mid June, but in excellent shape as well.

The river color is clear, to slightly off color throughout the entire system. It can’t really get much better.

As crazy as it sounds, the Truckee is currently out producing the LT on the dry fly front. It’s been good and getting better by the day!

LITTLE TRUCKEE RIVER FLY FISHING REPORT:

Not much has changed on the Little Truckee River since our last report. It’s still running quite high for mid June. The flows have been consistently around 500 for weeks now. Many consider this to be “flood” stage. Be careful when wading and use a wading staff if you have one.

We’ve been wondering for weeks why the water is staying so high for this time of year. The rumor mill has it that there’s a maintenance project coming up. Sounds like the flows will drop to 15cfs for much of July and August.

This is really crappy news for the fish and anglers that take advantage of the amazing summer hatches over there.

I’ll follow up with additional details as I get more information.

For now, look for fish in the seams, deep water and maybe even the riffles if you see any bugs hatching.

You may get lucky and find some fish on dries, but the hatches have been limited with the high water. See fly selection below.

Water temps are very similar to the Truckee, 50s most of the day.

Middle Fork, Feather River:

Flows have finally dropped on the MF but it’s still in great shape to walk and wade. We just won’t be running float trips for a while now.

The nymphing and dry fly game has been great with good numbers of 8-15″ fish coming to hand.

The dry fly bite has been good lately in the morning/afternoon, and again for a few hours before dark. Don’t miss out if you want to throw dries with no other anglers around!

FLY SELECTION:

Luckily, we’re pretty much throwing the same flies on all the rivers right now and not much has changed since the last report other than…Green Drakes!

Attractors- Worms, rubberlegs, leeches, crayfish (not on the LT).

Droppers/Nymphs- Baetis 16-18s, Golden Stones 8s, Green Drakes 10-12s, PMDs 16s, Tan caddis 16s and 18s and any assortment of olive and black Perdigons are working.

The fish are not picky in the fast stuff, just make sure you get it down!

Although we haven’t seen many grasshoppers yet, Hopper-dropper rigs are kicking down a lot of fish right now.

Streamers- Definity have the streamer rod ready with these flows, especially on the cloudy rainy days in the canyon, like we’ve been having. There’s a few fish are willing to chase, anything from a small leach or streamers 3-4 inches in length have been doing the trick. Pause your retrieve!

Trout Spey- We’ve had a blast throwing the trout spey around a few times in the last few weeks. Try size 14-16 soft hackles and olive streamers.

  • A few nice fish from a busy Father’s Day weekend!

No surprises here, most fish are coming on bobber and Euro rigs, Hopper-droppers, dry flies, streamers and trout spey, to round out the techniques. It’s all working!

SUMMER OUTLOOK:

In the near future, Truckee weather will be warm. Get that thermometer ready for the rest of summer season. We’re not near 68 degree water temps yet, but it’s coming.

This is the first time in 25 years Tahoe and the Truckee River have had 100% snowpack or more, 3 years in a row. Needless to say this summer should be one for the books. If you’re looking to get out with a guide while you’re in town, book it as soon as you know your dates! Summer bookings are looking strong already, and you don’t what to miss out!
